After college, the ideal scenario is to have that brand new career all lined up and ready for when you enter the real world.  You have been working hard for the past four…..for some five years at your chosen study.  You have paid thousands of dollars in tuition and acquired the famous college physique.  One thing that should turn on a light bulb is that ever so important internship!  An internship is a great way to gain experience, brighten that resume, and see if what you thought you wanted to do after college is a good idea for you.  One thing that some students can overlook while at their internship is the full time offer that can come along with it.  From an employer‚’s perspective, there is no better way to test future employees than to see them actually work, and many times, work for free!  If you are about to enter an internship or searching for one, keep in mind that this is a great start to landing that career.

After doing research and really exploring the hiring patterns of various companies that hire high quantities of college graduates, I found some interesting numbers.  According to BusinessWeek, 51% or new hires in 2008 at Ernst & Young were former interns.  Another popular company for college graduates is MTV.  According to BusinessWeek, “Internships are key to getting a foot in the door at MTV, which also includes channels like Comedy Central & Nickelodeon.”  While doing my research, I came across some popular companies that had hired roughly 85-90% of their interns for full time positions!  If your working hard and contributing positively while doing your internship, why wouldn‚’t they hire you for full time!

As you can see, an internship is not just a great resume builder, but also your “foot” into some of the toughest companies to get hired for after college.  You must show that you are interested in working there full time while at the internship.  More importantly, you must show that you can grow and be a positive investment for the company.  If you didn’t know, companies can spend thousands of dollars on a single hire, and in today’s economy, that’s not small change.  So, go out there and really find that perfect internship, have fun, work hard, and really show the company that you would be that amazing full time employee who adds value to the company!
