As we begin to search for that career, we have to find that position, submit your resume, and of course, have those dreaded interviews. The "dreaded" interview is a way the employer can get add a face to the resume, of which they have thousands. If your is chosen for the interview, give yourself a pat on the back. Now it's time to put on your "A" game and be the best candidate you can be. Before you head into the interview, there are some Do's and Don't that could make or break you in getting that position! Virginia Tech's Career Services department has a great list of these Do's and Dont's, below is several that I thought are crucial!
Interview Dont's
1) Don't falsify application materials or interview questions.
2) Don't act desperate!
3) Don't be unprepared for the "typical" interview questions.
4) Don't chew gum or smell like a pack of cigarettes.
5) Turn off your cell phone! Unless you are a doctor on call, your wife is due, or someone is on their death bed, leave it in the car!
Interview Do's
1) Arrive early. 10 minutes is a safe amount of time.
2) Make sure you are dressed to impress!
3) Offer a firm handshake, and make eye contact.
4) If you encounter multiple people on your way to the interview room, treat them with respect, they might have a decision on your employment.
5) Make sure to ask intelligent follow up questions. Be interested in the organization!
From my experience, I always did my research on the organizations website and ask around to see if alumni work there or have had an interview there. I find that after the initial 2 minutes, the ice is broken and it becomes much more relaxed. Don't let the relaxed feeling overtake you, this isn't the beach and you don't have your surf board!
